Introduction:
Chooks are very intelligent animals if you watch them and learn about them, they are aware of things going around them, if you spend time with them, start to like you and get used to you, and can sense if there are any animals around them. This fact page will tell you all about them!
Chooks as pets:
Chooks can become great pets, they provide fresh eggs and keep you company whether you pamper them or you just spend a little time collecting their eggs. If you keep spending a little time with your chooks every day, they will start to get used to you and may at least start to come closer to you than they normally would. You have to show them that you will not hurt or disturb them. If your chooks start handfeeding, you must relize that this is a great start to them getting used to you and that you have been spending enough time with them for them to noticed that you will not do them any harm. If you are interested in pampering your chooks and you want an easy job to train them, you should consider getting bantams! They adapt to humans a little bit more than standard chooks and are easier to handle as they are smaller and lighter. The only bad thing is that they lay less eggs, smaller eggs, and not every breed comes with a bantam size. Although, these problems are not problems if you don't mind not getting an egg laying bird or a large egg sized bird. Just remeber that standards can also be trained so don't get in a heap that your desired breed does not have a bantam size. I hope you have fun with your pet chooks!
Diet:
Chooks are very usefull when it comes to recycling, they eat you kitchen scraps so you don't have to waste them. They also eat varies of other foods like budgie seed, wheat seeds, laying pellets, shell grit, layers mash, corn etc. Chocolate, coffee, advacardo and rhubarb are toxic to chickens and should NEVER be fed to them!
Ages:
Chickens can live for around 12 years, some older, (like my Cinnamon who lived for 16 years!). Chooks under 12 months are called chick's. A male under 12 months is called a cockerel and a female, a pullet. A male over 12 months is called a rooster or a cock and a female, a hen. Domestic birds are classed under the word poultry.
